Holy Wednesday
The anointing at Bethany and the betrayal
When: Wednesday of Holy Week.
On Holy Wednesday the Church remembers the woman who poured precious ointment on Christ’s head in Bethany, shortly before His burial (Matthew 26:6–13). Her repentance and love are set against Judas, who that same day agreed to betray Christ for thirty pieces of silver.
In many parishes the Sacrament of Holy Unction (anointing of the sick) is served for all on Wednesday, praying for healing of soul and body.
The hymns invite each person to choose the path of the repentant woman rather than that of the betrayer.
