New Calendar July 31 Old Calendar August 13
Why they are a saint
Joseph of Arimathea is a Biblical figure who assumed responsibility for the burial of Jesus after his crucifixion. Three of the four canonical Gospels identify him as a member of the Sanhedrin, while the Gospel of Matthew identifies him as a rich disciple of Jesus. The historical location of Arimathea is uncertain, although it has been identified with several towns.
Life
Righteous Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple of the Lord. As a member of the Sanhedrin he took no part in condemning Christ.
After the Crucifixion he boldly asked Pilate for the Lord's Body and, with Nicodemus, took it down from the Cross, wrapped it in a winding-cloth and laid it in a new tomb he had prepared for himself, in the presence of the Mother of God and the Myrrh-bearing Women. He later travelled widely proclaiming the Gospel and died peacefully in England.
