Life

Saint Theodosius of the Caves, the father of monasticism in Russia, was born at Vasilevo near Kiev. From youth he loved church and holy books, despite the opposition of his strict mother. At twenty-four he secretly left home, and Saint Anthony of the Caves blessed his tonsure; when his mother found him, he persuaded her to become a nun in Kiev.

He laboured more than the others, carrying water, chopping wood and grinding grain. Ordained hieromonk in 1054 and chosen igumen in 1057, he built a new church and cells and introduced the cenobitic rule of the Studion monastery, and built a courtyard where the destitute could receive food and drink. He fell asleep in the Lord in 1074; his relics were found incorrupt in 1091 and he was glorified in 1108. His Life was written by Saint Nestor the Chronicler.
